As far back as I can remember, managing my weight has always been important to me. If I was putting on a few pounds, I just cut back on what I ate. As long as I exercised, I was never really concerned about what I ate. I craved chocolates and sweets, drank one soda a day…since I was thin, why did I need to really pay attention to what I ate?
I assumed my Hypoglycemia was just a normal part of life.
However, when I entered my 40's things began to change. I was shocked when I went for my annual physical and my cholesterol was high, and my weight was actually creeping towards the upper end of “normal” despite the fact I had just finished my first half marathon and played tennis twice a week…on top of my gym workouts. My allergies that used to be “seasonal” seemed to flare up all the time, and some foods just did not agree with me. I seemed to alternate between constipation and diarrhea… and the much dreaded phase of pre menopause kicked in with mood swings, irregular periods, increased sugar cravings and fatigue. Dragging through the days with all these symptoms, and crawling into bed by 8:30pm all became part of my “normal” daily life.
What the heck was going on? I was only in my 40′s, but to be honest, I FELT like I was much much older.
My doctor recommended I pay attention to what I eat… but she did not have anyone available to sit down with me and really review what I was eating and help me make sure I was in fact eating a healthy diet. So I did what everyone else does, I searched the internet, listened to friend’s advice and slowly made changes through trial and error.
After three years I finally lowered my cholesterol, eliminated my digestive issues and am close to balancing my hormones…all through proper nutrition. I switched to a whole foods diet, replaced toxic personal products with safer ones, and utilized plant based and herbal supplements for my hormonal imbalances. Over time, my energy increased and instead of feeling old and tired, I was actually feeling my age..sometimes even younger. My allergies disappeared and I found I was not getting sick like I used to.
I have been so inspired by my transformation, that I decided to make it my mission in life to help others who have struggled with health and nutrition problems like myself.
My Education I received my Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at The George Washington University in 1989. During my years as a Speech Pathologist, I have worked with the geriatric population and have seen first hand individuals who are suffering from the complications of Type 2 Diabetes.
When I decided to expand my career to include supporting Diabetics with changing their diets, I decided to pursue formal training so I would be fully equipped to properly help others. I received my training as a Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition’s cutting-edge Health Coach Training Program. During my training, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques, and innovative coaching methods with some of the world’s top health and wellness experts. My teachers included Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine; Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine; Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center; Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University; Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating; and many other leading researchers and nutrition authorities. My education has equipped me with extensive knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and preventive health. Drawing on these skills and my knowledge of different dietary theories, I work with clients to help them make lifestyle changes that produce real and lasting results. In addition to my training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I also became certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. This prestigious certification is for individuals who have been trained by only the most qualified educational programs in the area of Holistic Nutrition and Holistic Health Coaching. There are so many health conditions related to poor nutrition but I am choosing to focus on helping pregnant women struggling with Gestational Diabetes and anyone who is pre-diabetic or has Type 2 Diabetes.
